NOTE: Quantities for food listed are for one year. However, we feel
the amount of chlorine bleach stated is greatly underestimated. Especially during disasters, sanitary conditions will be at
much greater risk. For this reason, we suggest you plan for a
MINIMUM of at least 1 gallon (4 liters) of bleach per month, possibly
more depending on your family's usage.
Additionally, this plan's suggested water only covers two weeks.
Since water is THE MOST IMPORTANT SURVIVAL ITEM, we encourage you to store at least a three months' supply of
water. Keep in mind, this does not include water for personal
hygiene, pets, spillage, laundry or cooking.
Books like Kearny's Nuclear War Survival Skills and Dickey's Passport to Survival, give techniques for sprouting, gluten making and growing wheat grass. These items supply vitamin C and a wide variety of dishes can
be made from these four items. Though Esther Dickey's book was
written 30+ years ago, its practical information is timeless.
Passport to Survival has recently been re-released by her daughter.
Dickey recommends 40 additional foods that can be rotated or have
a shelf life of 1 to 5 years. The 40 + 4 yields a healthy diet
of over 100 dishes that can be used for varied meals. Among the
additional items Dickey recommends are:
- peanut butter
- tomato juice
- canned and dried vegetables
- dried legumes
- molasses
- yeast

- dried fruit
- vegetable oil
- evaporated milk
- grains
- multi-vitamins
|
The Kearny diet is basically the Mormon 4 plus cooking oil (about
23 pounds/10.5 kilos) and beans (around 113 pounds/51 kilos).
This provides essential oils and a much better amino acid balance,
but lacks variety.
Simple dishes like beans and vegetables can be varied by changing spices. They're an easy, economical
way to make the same rehydrated vegetables dishes "put on a different
face."
